Trello Vs. Slack- A comparative study

By JonasPosted on February 4, 2022January 31, 20228min read809 views

This paper will be comparing two of the most popular tools for teams – Slack and Trello. It will discuss the similarities and differences between them, as well as what features they each offer that are unique to them.

What is Trello?

The creators of the Trello app software characterize the software as a “collaboration tool.” It tells you what’s being worked on right now and who’s working on it. The user interface is straightforward, consisting of a massive board with numerous cards and lists that display the status of your project. Its primary use case is as a project management tool, and it concentrates its capabilities there.

What exactly is Slack?

The Slack app is a company-wide instant messaging service that acts as a hub for all work-related communication. It comprises workspaces and channels that allow you to exchange files and communicate with all team members. Slack may be used for private talks with one or more particular users in addition to group discussions.

Trello vs. Slack

Both the software are good for project management. Considering the Trello vs. Slack debate, Trello lets you see the status of your projects at a glance, whereas Slack focuses on communication between you and your coworkers.

I. Primary Functions, Organization, and Features

Trello

Trello is typically used as project management and task management tool, such as when planning a group vacation or launching a new website. ‘Things to Do,’ ‘Doing,’ and ‘Done’ are the default lists, but you may change their names or add more if you desire. Each list allows you to add tasks in cards and assign specific users to do them. If you’re planning a vacation and need to arrange flights, for example, you may delegate that activity to a particular individual. Once that individual has started or finished working on that assignment, they can transfer the card to another list to signal that they are working on it.

You may also include a due date on the card so that your team knows when work must be done. This is highly useful for keeping track of time and meeting deadlines. The whole public can view the board, certain members of your group, or all members of your organization. You may alter the visibility settings on your board at any moment. If you wish to add new members to your board, you must first make it public before inviting them.

Slack

Slack is generally utilized as a software application to connect with your team and exchange essential files. The product’s primary function is a chat room, and it is intended to be used instead of email. This is advantageous since you can access all of your project’s files and communications in one place rather than having them strewn over numerous platforms. You may divide your conversation into separate channels for different members.

Alternatively, you may create channels open to all employees in your company. If you need to communicate privately with one or more of your coworkers, you can use the Direct Message feature. Slack isn’t merely for text-based conversations. It also has video calls so you can talk to your coworker’s face to face. You can show your screen when you need to communicate vital information more clearly and directly during a video conference call. However, this feature is only available to subscribers who have upgraded to Slack’s Standard premium subscription or above.

Suppose we analyze overall Trello vs. Slack functioning, Slack is a terrific tool for collaboration and communication, but it is not project management software. It doesn’t have any facilities to keep track of time or follow the project’s tasks.

II. User Interface and Ease of Use

Slack

Slack is a simple application to set up and use. It’s yet another product where the user experience design has been given much thought. To join a workspace, type in the name of the workspace you were invited to, and you’ll be up and running in no time. After that, you’ll have access to every channel on your team.

It’s also simple to set up a workstation. You register using your email address and then input the verification code emailed to you. Then you type in your company’s name and the project that your team is working on. You may then use their email addresses to add your team members to the channel. It’s as simple as that. Once you’ve gained access to your workspace, you can either build new tracks for your team or use those already there. By selecting the ‘+’ button next to Direct Message, you may also send private messages to your team members.

Pressing your name at the top of the left-hand side of the screen brings you a variety of choices, such as your Profile & Account and Preferences. In Profile & Account, you may edit your name, bio, photo, and contact information. You may also establish a status to notify your team colleagues of your current availability.

Trello

Trello is simple to use and takes little effort to set up. The product designers have carefully considered the tool’s usability. To make an account, all you need is your email address, name, and password. After entering this information, you’ll be sent to your dashboard, where you may create a new board or edit an existing one.

The task management software has an easy-to-navigate UI. Lists and cards may be easily created, moved, and modified. You can access your preferences, profile, cards, activity, keyboard shortcuts, and more in the top right-hand corner of your dashboard, where your initials are. You may also change the initials icon to a photo and customize your notification settings. Colorblind users would like the ‘Color-Blind Friendly Mode. It truly shines as simple work management and project collaboration tool. You may then use their email addresses to add your team members to the channel. It’s as simple as that. Once you’ve gained access to your workspace, you can either build new channels for your team or use those already there.

It’s easy to use the channels. You may pin messages to make them more visible to your team members by pinning them to the top of the track. This is handy if you need to provide your team with an essential update. You may also look at the channel’s highlights, such as the most popular posts or the most recent file uploads.

III. Reliability

Trello

Trello is a very secure software application. Because it’s essentially task management software, any outage will almost certainly significantly impact productivity. They are SOC2 Type 2 certified and PCI-DSS, Privacy Shield, and ISO/IEC 27001 compliant. Every seven days, they execute automatic vulnerability scans, and once a year, they conduct penetration testing. A complete encrypted backup of the system is also performed every 24 hours.

The platform creates a secure connection utilizing 128-bit Advanced Encryption employing Transport Layer Security. This covers all data transferred between the Trello servers and the web, desktop, iOS, and Android apps.” The company’s security activities are extensive, and they follow several procedures to assure the safety of their software.

Slack

Slack is also a highly secure platform. They have SOC 2 Type 2 and SOC 3 certifications ISO/IEC 27001 (and 27017) and Privacy Shield certifications. Slack hires reputed security organizations to conduct regular assessments of its tools to look for flaws. Slack’s online platform is also subjected to regular automated scans, and all of its workers are subjected to background checks.

Slack encrypts all communication in transit with the most up-to-date and trustworthy encryption suites and protocols. At rest, their customer data is encrypted. Premium Slack users have access to more advanced security features, but the platform’s free tier is also relatively safe.

In-depth comparison- Trello vs. Slack

  1. The platform’s use is one of the direct contrasts between the two systems, namely Trello and Slack. The Slack platform is a robust communication tool that allows organization employees to communicate messages via public and private channels and project-specific channels. The slack platform also enables users to communicate direct messages to one another.
  2. The Slack platform allows users to engage in one-on-one video conferencing. Trello, on the other hand, is a project management application that is commonly used for managing project processes and activities. The Trello platform allows you to assign tasks, track activity progress, and manage project activities all from one place.
  3. The price scheme is another distinction between the two systems. The basic version of the Trello platform is free, and users may use it to do basic tasks. However, the Trello site also provides a business class type subscription, which costs $9.99 for a month. The Trello platform also has a business subscription, which costs $20.83 a month and gives users access to additional features. On the other hand, the Slack platform is an open-source platform that allows users to access the network’s fundamental functionalities. The user must pay $6.67 per month for the regular edition of the Slack platform.
  4. Another distinction between the two systems is their ease of use. Because both the Trello platform and the Slack platform leverage connectivity, both platforms are easily accessible. However, compared to Slack, the Trello platform is more attractive and has a superior user experience. The Trello platform’s user interface design is more sophisticated than the Slack platform’s.
  5. Integration with other platforms and apps is another difference between these two platforms. The Slack platform can easily interface with other apps and platforms, whereas the Trello platform does not have this capability. Slack is a superior collaboration platform that allows users to integrate various APIs. The slack platform offers customizable assistance as well. The platform may be changed according to the users’ needs in a customizable option. However, the Trello platform does not allow this feature.
  6. The platform’s intended demographic is another significant distinction between the Trello and Slack platforms. The Trello platform is primarily aimed at individual users since it tracks project activity and monitors project monitoring tasks. On the other hand, the slack platform is aimed at the entire business or corporation because it is used to interact and chat within the organization. Engineering, IT, sales, customer support, human resource, and marketing solutions are available through Slack.

Conclusion

Slack or Trello isn’t the right question to ask; both are effective communication platforms for managing your team and tasks.

Trello excels at keeping track of project progress, but Slack is great for interacting with your team. Trello’s interface is simpler to use, so it’s a good option if you’re not tech-savvy. Slack is a little more challenging to use, but it shouldn’t take you long to get the hang of it. So, which platform should you use to manage your team? Overall, Slack is the best option for communicating with your whole team and sharing essential documents.

While Trello is great for project management, you’ll need to utilize a different platform for communication. Because Trello and Slack may be connected, I recommend using both services rather than picking one over the other. They function well together and allow you to communicate with your complete team in one spot while also managing the progress of your project.
